Next school year the line up is going to include Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Kaiba, FLCL, some semi serious mecha show like GunxSword, and possibly Cowboy Bebop.

As a college anime club president I have found something horrible. None of the Freshman in my club have seen Bebop, at all. Few have seen FLCL or DBZ. Turns out most anime fans born after 1993 missed those series completely because of several reasons I wont get into! While DBZ is important, I think Bebop and FLCL are more important to anime anime as a whole, so I have to show them next year.

I’m the president of a long running anime club at my university and I love showing anime that people wouldn’t normally pick up on their own.

I do think it was sad that the anime “Shinsekai Yori” didn’t have any mentions, especially for soundtrack. At last since it’s going for 26ish episodes it has a shot for best 2012 anime of 2013.

It’s clear that they did the best they could condensing an entire volume into a single episode, but the show really could have used just one more episode. Being a noitaminA show restricted the episode length unfortunately.

Though like Baku and Flags mentioned, the Church scene was fantastic. The way they meet up after so many years and just start jamming without saying anything. Then “Sakamichi no Melody” starts playing as they run out laughing as if still in their youth. Great scene that made up for things a bit.

By the way, I doubt we’ll ever see a sequel to Denpa Teki. There’s only 3 light novels with the OVAs covering the 1st and 3rd and I keep hearing the 2nd light novel sucked.

Personally, I don’t think you can enjoy Sleeping Dogs to its full extent if you can’t understand Cantonese. Like Jeff, the game’s so amusing when you hear and understand what the civilians are saying – swearing at you, wishing you would die, dissing your driving and a bunch of other stuff! It’s a great game in general! An awesome Hong Kong undercover cop story that could’ve been a drama itself. Hell I’d totally watch Sleeping Dogs if it was a live-action series, just look at that live-action trailer! But yeah, it really hits home and with the detailed Hong Kong setting, it only makes it a more greater experience from start to end. And fark man! Wei Shen you player!

As for FTL… it might just be because I only recently played it like… yesterday was the last time I played it so this is just me being really bias. I wouldn’t dare say that it’s better than other games but to me, I found this game to be one of the most enjoyable and addictive game I’ve played this year. Each restart is a different experience and a lot of shit can happen in this game. I’ve bet the boss only once out of 6-7 tries but I still come back to this game over and over. It’s got a simple design to it but a strategically complex system where even if you’re constantly pausing, the game is still hard. You’d think pausing would give you a big giant help and make the game easy. It does give you a big help but it doesn’t make the game easy. At once, I lost my Engi’s because they were shot down while fixing. I had fires here and there, holes and a dead Oxygen system. By the time I won, I had one person left with 3 bars of Hull health left. It’s always a different run each time, and even the difficulty completely changes randomly. Such a good game, I do recommend you guys to play it and maybe Adrian would recommend it too(?)

Need for Speed Most Wanted… was a big disappointment for me. the last time I played a Need for Speed game was the old Most Wanted. I’m not a big car fan like Xavier so maybe I should’ve checked what was install for me in this new game before buying it. This is what I expected: a story. The game has no story, it’s just pure racing and if you don’t have the Online Pass, you shouldn’t even play this game at all. It throws you in and tells you to get points so you can reach the top and become most wanted. Unfortunately you can’t stick with one car and race every single race there is. And them cop chases are stupid… but yeah, maybe there was a warning out there saying this game has no story and that I just didn’t know of it. I just play games guys, nothing more, nothing less XD But the multiplayer is fun at least

I’ll be checking out Looper and Seven Psychopaths soon as well.

About Shinsekai Yori, yeah the main story is set ~1000 years after present day. How things are playing out so far is very interesting.

Shinsekai Yori

It feels like a mix of the novel “the Giver” and and the anime “Dennou Coil” if you’ve ever experienced those. I had literally only downloaded the first episode because it’s being subbed by UTW and was happily surprised by the quality. I downloaded the next 3 episodes and it amazed me how quickly that hour slid by and how well the world of this anime captured my imagination. It seems to be based on a novel if that makes a difference.

My question from last podcast.

Gundam Age had a failure of an ending and the way they handled ZEHATTO was a disappointment in a way that I never even imagined could happen. One can argue that the show went downhill when they threw away a lot of Zeheart’s characterization as a “good guy” when in episode one he orders fire on civilians or when Kio was kid napped. What point do you think things went wrong and what 2-3 changes would you make to improve the series?

for me
1. Put Spriggan in season 2 and into Woolf’s squad and work her backstory into it so we can remove the extraneous episode in season 3 explaining her
2. Just go with a corrupt Vegan military and have Kio target them as the cause of the war. Cliche, but way better than what they did.
3. Have Flit resolve his hatred with something, ANYTHING, but Yurin talking to him. More effective would be cancer patient leaving with Kio and Flit having to cope with an obviously innocent Vegan whos eerily reminiscent of Yurin.

Also the Age video game upped the ante in the section for season 1. They had Flit and Yurin share an on screen kiss before Flit heads of to battle. Just thought that was an interesting change.

YAY Anime logic @ Hyouka

Because Flags is right. That show was fucking great.

Mine involves Kio getting killed because he wont fight some named antagonist seriously, Flit kicking ass in his grampa gundam and avenging Kio, the Vegan military getting crippled, and the Vegan populace becoming a new Earth colony (against Flit’s will, but what power does one grumpy retired old man have over an entire government)

In the end the Asuno family doesn’t exactly have a nice ending, but it would be fine with me in the same way that 0080 ended. I usually like happy endings more, but the recent Gundam series have had too much flawless victory and understanding.

So far I’m pretty happy with that series.

Also, Flags should get like his own manga corner. Because if you can talk about pajamas for 5 min, you can talk about something I care about for 5 min.

But nah, I’m joking. Sorta. Not really. But yeah, anime kinda sucks this season. Maybe do an “anime of the week” sort of thing. Or just continue to discuss the complex character motives and philosophical undertones of Milky Holmes.

The thing is Jeff… your decline in love for anime will only get worst because the time you started losing interest, all the shows just so happenly became majorily bad. Making it hard for you to get back in and making it hard for people like me to get people like you back in. Gene puts it in good words, stick with backlogs and if you want, I can recommend the better shows in each season so you don’t have to suffer through finding them(?)

In terms of series, the only show I’d recommend to you is Natsuyuki Rendezvous and possibly Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita. Not sure if you want to stick around for Sword Art Online but you could if you want. Everything else might be off putting to you : (Though I’m most likely watching more than you, the number in how many I usually have in my airing folder is halved)

Or read some manga. Would love to hear more (and any) manga discussions on the cast.

I don’t get the hype train about Day Z. I know the zombie apocalypse simulator is indeed interesting but just how that game looks (I know it’s a mod) is a bit off putting. Gun feel makes me stuffy #Justsaying.

1) Kingdom- Something done better w/ the same aesthetic and with Kugimiya Rie in it is the 12 kingdoms.

2) Tari Tari- You say all that but you cannot deny the same face syndrome P.A has been incorporating since Hanasaku Iroha. Guess what that’s also in Another.

3) Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita- I do like Cute/Fluffy shows, as I did with Hanamaru Kingdergarden. That has a prominent director directing something fluffy and cute.

4) Muv Luv total Eclipse- Xavier fuck you for liking this show. Remember the trap that Infinite Stratos put you into?

5) Binbou-gami ga!- Using deities as a twist hook in order to get you watch a comedy that’s horribly animated… Hmm it’s like Ahh Megami Sama (AH my Goddess!) meets Beelzebub! Fuck.

6) Natsuyuki Rendezvous- Finally romance reminiscent of Paradise Kiss, and Nana. It’s done by Madhouse right?

7) Hagure Yuusha no Estetica- Wow I’ve seen this somewhere… Like so many other generic ass fucking piece of shit fantasy scenario ass wanting piece of shit titty fuck.Fuck this anime.

8) Sword Art Online- It’s totally not the Tower of Daruga at all….

9) Kokkoro Connect- Watch “Body Exchange” (Hentai). Superior animation with the premise that is fitting for porn.

and Milky Holmes is fucking amazing.

Well.. I’m done with anime simply because of aesthetic reasons and unexcited announcements of who’s licensing what and who’s doing which adaptation.

I think this is that crunching point in whether I really give a shit about anime as it caters towards fan service to sell figma and Blu-Rays rather than good old traditionalized stories. And even then I dumbed down to the extent of accepting well executed shows. But this year alone has showed me that Anime is this robotic figure trying to generate some sort of revenue to prolong it’s industry. And to be frank it’s missing it’s soul. Anime is an industry, but separating it between corporate and the creative process is the best. Take Fate/Zero for instance, for as epic that show really is there is still a saber figma that’s lying around simply because she’s that uninteresting piece of a protagonist that the series portray her as. It’s not like Tokusatsu where the point is to sell you the toys as it targets towards a younger audience.

In other words Surprise me. Because you’ve been lacking that all these years.

Tari Tari – Duuuuude, this show is gonna be good~ (Yeah okay… I'm a big fan of P.A Works so I'm bias) But umm… Tari Tari as you guys know has a musical element to it and looks very similar to Hanasaku Iroha (and yes Flags, it has dudes in it. Not dude… dudes~). Well… so far nothings really happened but it looks promising. Give it a try.

Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita – so the episode's out, has anyone seen this? It's so cute and sweet and rainbows and cuddles and fairies and no… I don't like this. I think it's trying too hard to be funny (besides the toaster… that was hilarious!) but yeah… not watching this.

Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse – Xavier! Have you seen it? What do you think of it? It's not as bad as I thought, actually really serious. O_O

Chouyaku Hyakunin Isshu will be Kana-chan's favourite anime (Kanade from Chihayafuru)

Binbou-gami ga! – I think binbou translates to misfortune or poverty (hense the Poverty God in the synopsis) nor sure if that's the direct and accurate translation though cause I'm only guessing from what I've seen in episode 1. Which was really comedic ;D Give it a try guys.

Natsuyuki Rendezvous – A really nice romance series which is most likely the best of the season.

Hagure Yuusha no Estetica – Saw the trailer for this and I'm put off already. Hikasa's got so many roles this season but they're all in bad shows D: WHY!?!??!!? WHY MUST YOU SHARE THE SAME FATE AS KITAMURI ERI!?

Sword Art Online – O_O WHAT!??!?! A SEQUAL!!??! I'm pretty sure Accel World isn't a sequal for Sword Art but the person who write the light novel for Accel also wrote Sword Art so they share the same original creator. Where did you get this information!? O_O

Kokoro Connect – the anime version of Freaky Friday! Oh god…

FUCK YES MILKY HOLMES IS BACK!!! Dude… I have to be honest with you guys, Milk Holmes might even be better than K-On :O I want to see what they've done with the baby because they seriously pulled off a beautiful Clannad-like ending in season 2. Putting that aside, there’s the big brands which I had expected to look good like Assasins Creed 3 but what really surprised me at E3 were two games mainly: The Last of Us and Watch Dogs.

You can say they’re like the surprises of E3 for me since I’m very limited with my knowledge and never knew what those games were until I saw their respective trailers and a title to label what I saw. Though I’ll save the rest for the podcast ^^

As for me I am saving up for university. Starting my first year this fall and it’s gonna cost an arm and a leg.

The only game I really play these days is TF2. Gotta get those hats man.

I myself have been busy with some holiday homework as I”m on break at the moment from school but with the Tourney coming up and school starting on the day after, everything is gonna get hectic for me :

I was playing ME3 a lot, then all that ending talk surfaced and I sort of lost interest in playing. Now that we know the extended cut will release sometime, I’ve opted to just wait until then to play again.

You recently discussed great video game characters and were kind of drawing a blank. What makes a good character in a video game is very different than what makes a good character in a real narrative. Video games are character-challenged in the traditional sense. My best best video game experiences happened to be the most cinematic and character focused: Games like Uncharted, Enslaved, MGS, Heavy Rain, maybe even GTA IV. Games that have actual narratives, development, and contain characters that, i don’t know, HAVE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS for starters. I really thought the convergence of Film and Video Games would blow up sooner, and more games would blur the line between cinema and game, but it just hasn’t happened and it pisses me off. By the way, you forgot to mention CLOUD STRYFE. What the hell.

You brought up Ano Hana. Ano Hana is an above average anime. It would be a masterpiece if one fundamental element was changed: If Menma wasn’t an actual fucking ghost, but rather a manifestation of Ginta’s guilt and grief. I feel like if they ran with that idea and took it to it’s natural conclusion, that anime would have been perfection. As it stands, it’s pretty good.

Now for something off-topic. I have no one to vent to on this matter, so bear with me… I just finished reading a little book called Oblivion Recording. Now. Since I’ve finished watching Kara no Kyoukai, I’ve held it up as not only the best anime I’ve watched, but more importantly, one of the best examples of how to adapt a story to a different medium, make necessary changes, and still maintain truth and faithfulness.

During my original run, I enjoyed watching Oblivion Recording, but I instantly recognized it as the weakest entry in the series. I had hopes that the book would be much better. And it was. Oh my sweet Jesus it was. I am angry. I feel like my holy grail has been tainted. UFO Table straight up gave Oblivion Recording the Fate/Stay Night treatment.

Misaya Ouji, and Kurogiri Satsuki are reduced to shallow cartoon characters in this film and you don’t sympathize with them at all. There is a freaking 10 page (not kidding) exposition explaining EXACTLY what happened to Kurogiri, why he is the way he is, and his exact motivations. You might say cutting out such lengthy exposition for an adaptation is only natural, and a good editing decision. Sure, if it didn’t mean taking a chainsaw to the script and stripping not only every ounce of depth from the characters, but the juicy parallelism that doesn’t comes across in the movie. The book is extremely disturbing and morally grey, the movie feels like 80% fluff. The book is almost on par with Paradox Spiral as far as content goes, and the movie is just… a somewhat head-scratching transition between two much greater masterpieces.

Sure there would be more talking and exposition, but this movie should have been two hours long, I don’t care. It wouldn’t even cost much to animate. Every ounce of that exposition (especially Kurogiri) is fucking mind-bending and central to understanding the story. This is getting lengthy. To summarize if you’re too lazy to read all this: the movie is not only off tonally, but almost none of the feelings I had while reading the book were present in this film. I never thought I’d say this but FUCK YOU UFO TABLE for shitting the bed so badly after such a 5 top-notch adaptations in a row.

Natsume also ended and is there news of another season? It looked like that was it and I think it’d be a befitting ending to leave it like that ^^ Also, Ano Natsu…. at the beginning I was really seeing it in a negative way but I kept to the anime and guess what… it was beautiful. Definitely better than Ano Hana. These 4 shows are constantly moving around in my head, taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th because I can’t decide yet. It was a slow burn for the first half of the season but when we got near the end, everything picked up! ;D

I never thought of it just now but (as mentioned in the podcast) that innovation isn’t prevalent in the Anime Industry. Good old standards in providing fans fanservice to which studio is doing what and to which Licenser is licensing what. That… and in comparison to the Gaming industry falls soooo much… especially when thinking about Japan’s ways of approaching gaming also.

Nisemonogatari is single-handedly the best show of this season and could be the anime of the year. My gripe with that is how many of these titles that would push the boundaries and embracing its medium like Journey?

Also just doing our job in just… talking about whatever floats our boat for the week. Some people really like it… and that just really matters for them I guess..

*cough* K-On being continued in manga = potential 3rd season = YESSSSS!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 *cough*

Also, Flags, you've opened up my view on Nisemonogatari so much and I just wanted to thank you for that ;D and also I've too curious to sit back on this topic, stuff it… I'm checking out GiantBomb right now and my friend gave me game of thrones the day before you guys started talking about Game of Thrones in the last podcast episode, despite the sex scenes, the story seems interesting. Oh yeah, I've also started to play Batman Arkham Asylum and guys…. (especially Flags)…. we needa play some L4D2 cause I want my revenge on the Charger. FRICKEN CHARGER!!!

I haven’t fully listened to this one yet, but I did manage to revisit the previous podcast and there was not a single mention of DMC anime that I could find. Soo my whole reason for commenting and subsequent spiel were mostly off-topic. Lol, will try better at listening next time. That’s all for now. Other than that I started watching Brotherhood based mainly on comments on the podcast as well as comment from Tofu I believe. I’m liking it so far. But it might have to wait a little while because I also started Fate/Zero and I can’t seem to stop fapping.

I may not impose great philosophical debates like Marshall, but I hope you see that my continual comments are formed from support and fandom, even if they’re “empty” ones like these.

I just assume no one would want to comment on such an awkward podcast. I’m thinking back on it and I’m pretty sure that my feelings on advertising death don’t come across and just that I have some weird hatred of Whitney Houston. I guess I should just quickly state that my problem is with the former and not the latter.

I’ll say this about AGE, it sounds like the most interesting Gundam other than 00. The young characters are kind of a turn off to me at first glance, plus the embarrassing fact that I’m more of a Gundam watcher in dub, these things make me hesitate. Also you guys mentioned a fair amount of romance, and romance in a Gundam show is not appealing to me. The generation idea is intriguing I will say. For now I think I’ll wait until your reactions to the end of the first season.

I don’t think I have any say in the Nisemono and AGE talk because there’s not much I can say besides what’s already said though I must agree with Baku that you’re seriously MISSING OUT on FMA: Brotherhood mate ;D

I don’t know if it’s time management or any other reason for not watching shows over 52 episodes but I definitely know how you feel. I’m a lazy highschooler who has to balance out homework and anime (since I”m in my last year, it’s HECTIC D:) anyways I’ve always been a big procrastinator like the most of us and that also includes anime series or manga series. Take for example GTO or ES21, they are MASSIVE and something I wouldn’t pick up considering they’re both 200+ chapters each. even many people say it’s great it’s great and I didn’t pick it up, until I had nothing to do that is.So I picked up GTO and mate, I regretted not taking up my chance to read this MAMMOTH 200+ chapter manga when I had the chance because it was fricken AWESOME! Same goes for all the other great shows like FMA: Brotherhood. I watched FMA and decided in the past that I didn’t need to watch Brotherhood, after a whole year (I kid you not, it was actually a year or more roughly) of people saying DUDE IT’S GOOD PICK IT UP and me going DUDE I’VE SEEN THE FIRST ONE, I DON’T NEED TO…. well… I was wrong. Like GTO, and every other 52+ series that I kept putting down, I regret not watching ALL OF THEM SOONER ;D

Long story short…. FMA: Brotherhood is unmissable and do watch it whenever you have the chance ;D

On the point of AGE, I think the notion of telling a story that spans a hundred years and following the Asuno family is an intriguing outline and very different from a Gundam Experience. I don’t know if you know this but since this is based on this 100 year struggle, you get 3 different protagonists. The show is currently in generation 2, and the main character now is the son of the previous main character.

Alot of words has said about Age before it came out, and I came in this show thinking that it will hopefully entertain me in the lightest Gundamly manner. C’mon this show was announced on Dorocoro so it must be for kids right? Well yes and no. Yes in the fact that it’s made for kids, but transitions into more mature settings and themes. And definitely a no because it can get surprisingly dark at times.

If you want to compare 00, 00 isn’t consistent when it comes to focusing on it’s characters. They’re great, but I think AGE handles character, or Main character progression better than 00. It isn’t a political heavy show like 00, and the commentary on society isn’t present in this Gundam and I think you shouldn’t expect anything amazing from this show. I urge you not to.

But it doesn’t hurt to go through the first 15 episodes just to see where your feelings lie. If you like the show based on what you’ve seen so far, Generation 2 will not disappoint. Other than that you’re free to go.

Like you and Nisemono I think if you’re able to make surprises, you’re able to latch onto a show much quicker than everyone else.

But I have to agree with you; if it’s lack of character development that’s hindering the show for you, then I can’t argue, though I still maintain that these characters are so quirky and charismatic that they don’t require development to make them interesting like with most other characters.

Gundam AGE…. Okay. I have no inherent interest in Gundam, and I have very specific tastes when it comes to old looking anime, so from the bits I’ve seen from different Gundams, none of them interested me. The only Gundam that I gave my attention to was Gundam 00 which I enjoyed the FUCK out of. I really liked the revised approach taken, and it helped that some serious yen was funnelled into that bro-show.

I’m not going to debate your opinions on Trailblazer, but I will say that I think it put the series into perspective for me. I believe Flags said the movie is inconsequential to the characters. I have to disagree when it comes to one person; I believe that movie completed Setsuna’s character arc very nicely, really gave him the purpose he had searched for all his life. I felt satisfied with how they resolved that character, but I will leave it at that.

So what would it take for me to watch Gundam Age? Well, it would preferably have to be finished airing, or at least 26 episodes. (I’m still at a point in my fandom where I refuse to watch shows over 52 episodes) I am however interested in any non-spoilery ways you can tell me how it stacks up against 00.

But definitely yes in actually pinpointing my concerns that it didn’t move so much in terms of a story or an actual plot. It focused on conversations and character interactions w/ Araragi and co.

Which I pondered and thought of the only reason why I couldn’t like Nisemonogatari to an extent is the fact that it lacked character development. So far from episodes 1-4 (I think 5 is getting it’s claws on me and haven’t seen 6), it’s merely been interactions between characters and extending them. And it’s not character development or progression.

Say what you will about Araragi but that guy has come so far of a character after the events from Bakemono, and (I would say it) Kizumono. It’s kinda like “I know him, but not that I need to know more of”, and/or “I know him, give me a reason to know him more”.

Like Xavier commented, I am head over heels for Gen 2 of Gundam Age. It’s a flawed show, but in comparison to Nisemono, AGE had more character progression. So much so that the second generation protagonist feels like an extension from the first. But he goes into his own route of progression. Which I find it to be ingenious.

I think I’ve said my bit on Nisemonogatari. I need to rewatch Bakemono, but don’t have the time to atm. But I can tell you this my favorite character of the show yet, is Karen. Simply because she gets development.

Again to reiterate, not saying this show is bad, just I demand alot more out of it, rather than celebrating it’s characters with Araragi.

If you went TL;DR on this paragraph, I’ll make it short:
-Nisemono: The best of this season, but not our favorite and we can’t attach ourself as much as Flags to this show
-Gundam AGE: Not the best show, but Baku and I are enjoying the fuck out of it and we can claim it as our personnal favorite of this season so far.

I’ll garantee you something though: unless Nisemono does an 180 and goes downhill hardcore, it’s going to be nominated at the end of the year for the grand prize. For AGE, it really depends on how it’s gonna handle its second and third generation (and if it does what Baku and I are expecting, we’re gonna try to push it for the ultimate award).

Also, in a vote I saw on Sankaku, Nisemonogatari was rated the 5th “Most Boring” show of the season. It’s not everyones cup of tea. Though take anything you find on Sankaku with a grain of salt, and then consult your physician.

As for your woes about my opinion on Nisemonogatari, like in the pod, Good show, in fact great show that pushes boundaries I haven’t seen before. Does it entertain me? Not to an extent. I came into anime trying a variety of genres some amazing some not so much. It’s weird that for something as refreshing as Nisemono I can’t grasp it.

Could be hype. I have a tendency to give hyped animes of the season not too much of attention and focus on hidden gems like the current generation of Age.

And I guess for my third point, is just it’s my own opinion on the show, I voice it with 3 (now 2) other guys and the others like it a lot better than me.

As I have said constantly to Adrian (flags) that I always think Bakemonogatari was a good show. Nothing more to that. It may better serve as a better rewatch but I haven’t had time to do that yet.

DMC was great for it’s time but DMC3 (especially SE edition) was the perfect pinnacle of that franchise with amazing gameplay, perfect weapon selection, and above all an engaging story and cut-scenes so epic on a PS2 that they piss on 90% of all action anime in the last 10 years.

I am currently half-way through Dante route in DMC 4 and I cannot bring myself to keep playing that game. The most cumbersome and broken gameplay in the franchise coupled with garbage characters and an even more garbage storyline add up one of the worst follow-ups i’ve had the misfortune of playing.

I think you’re slightly off about why fanboys were up in arms about DMC anime. It’s not so much that they ruined Dante’s character, it’s that they completely failed in capitalizing on what made DMC 1 and especially 3 great. Those stories were full of fuck-yeah moments while the anime is full of coma-inducing snore-fests. The only episode worth a shit is when they actually tried to somewhat overlap with one of the games and actually bring in some DMC spirit.

Nisemonogatari feels like having a creator and staff catering to my every whim at the drop of a hat for 22 minutes every week. Baku, your reasoning for not sucking off Nisemono is bullshit. It makes you sad when it ends? Boohoo. That’s what good entertainment is supposed to do, leave you satisfied but wanting/needing more. Pick a better reason.

I’m about half-way through this mammoth 3 hour podcast so far, but couldn’t wait to pitch in I guess. Last thing for now? Maybe you guys were a little too quick to shit on Another. I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for at least another handful of episodes, this type of anime is so rare to find that I’m reticent to burn it just yet. I have possibly misguided faith that it will turn around and pay off by the end.

I tried out the TWGOK manga years ago (before the anime adaption), and I couldn’t really get into the characters and setting. Then I tried again with the anime and finished it, but just found it alright. It gets better as you go along, but I still can’t get into the characters and settings lol.

Bloody Manga.. I dropped that god only knows how many years that was. Like Flags mentioned, it’s been around for a while, but I remember reading at least two or three volumes before I dropped it.

Personally I felt Ano Natsu is very… ridiculous. I did walk into the show with positivity (honestly, I did enjoy Ano Hana somewhat, I confess) but I didn’t walk out with the same positivity. I do enjoy it somewhat currently but my first impressions were kinda meh

Okay yes, it’s true Flags, I went from ‘loving the OVA with no bad feelings’ to ‘someone who realized after thinking over it, there was bad stuff’ in it BUT BUT!! I’ve never seen such a tsundere character like Ririchiyo where they took the term tsun and used it as a personality habit she hates because of her upbringing in a rich household. It’s definitely a great anime which personally I love and satisfied with what they’ve done so far and I dare say that they do character development well.

Alright on your first point, I actually thought the opposite. Again in the subject of a trailer, I thought it exceled in selling me the product. So.. yeah the trailer was good.

Second Point: Yes what you just said was the case but kinda not my point. As I pointed out, I hate it when people love Fate/Zero when they haven’t played Heaven’s Feel. It kinda felt to me that people blindly say certain aspects were “epic” but for what reason? That’s what I wanted to know. Oh yeah and I don’t like surface opinions a.k.a when people point out the animation, characters, and action are all good. But here’s my point is that What part/perspective are those things good? And as I said I think Flags said it the best when the novels are far superior to the Anime is that the reason why Fate/Zero is so good is the narration of it and how characters are explored to where the term third dimensional won’t fit it. I can totally understand your point of watching something but not enjoying it as much as reading the novel because it’s due to us knowing what happens already and our brains automatically ‘compare’ the two and contrast between them while as for those who’ve only tasted one side would not fall for this trap. I get the same feeling for Boku Tomo because I’ve read the manga and the things done in the anime were sometimes great but sometimes not so great and that affected how I enjoyed the anime as much as you do Baku. I’m not sure if this is the case for you Flags but I assume you’ve read the manga or the light novels. It’s because of this I tend to stick to one adaption as much as possible.

Yeah don’t worry about the Battlefield 3 question, it was just something I overheard from people and thought I might as well put it up and see you guys discuss on it and thinking about it now the definition of game is too vast but if you guys wanted to know what I was on about it was all the restrictions the game had and how you had to follow or you can even move at some points (MM3 like Flags said is also said to be like this) like for example, you can’t pilot the fighter plane but you can only shoot. Brofist Baku, I can’t agree more with your statement because it’s all so true!! I really think the Gundam doujinshi is probs the best scene in Boku Tomo as of present ^^ A great show and I definitely loved how they animated it. Though surprisingly as much as I like it, Chihayafuru is my first and Fate Zero and Boku Tomo are fighting for 2nd right now ;D

Guilty Crown has been all over the place with peoples thoughts. some like, some don’t, some hate, some love. It’s a show that is most likely only offering it’s action genre to lure in more watchers and that’s most likely what hooked me in but either way I’m enjoying it for what it is and it’s finally picking up from the let-down in episode 6 or 7 upwards. Shu’s finally developing a backbone but still a wimp and Inori really needs more personality to her.

Ayase and Tsugumi are fun to see interact with each other considering they are basically always aiding each other due to Ayase piloting and Tsugumi making the technological decisions ;D And also the similar personality relation to Mugi and Azusa from K-On. Ayase is voiced by the same seiyyu as Mugi and the Ayana for Asusa as you know. Ayase ‘acts’ more refined like Mugi in ep 8 and Tsugumi’s futuristic ear’s are a symbol of Azusa’s cat ears OHOHOHOHOHOHO!!

I confess, Mawaru got interesting for me after episode 13 but only with the latest episode I actually feel the need in wanting to watch the next episode as soon as possible. This show is an iffy for me and there was times I told myself “just drop it” because I wasn’t that interested at first (which is why this is the second time picking it up, the first time I dropped it after ep 2) so in other words I think I’m like a bit like Baku how it pulls me back but much, much less powerful than how you’re feeling towards it Baku (if that made sense..)

I fricken looooove Saber and to be able to see her in a suit, she fricken looks BAMF man~ ;D Kiritsugu… do you guys think kiritsugu is two-timing OR is he manipulating his partner (not Irisviel, the other one) though… little illya is so cuute~! x3 By the way, I think Caster’s personality is really well done, the horrific idea of building up the boys hope then killing him definitely caught me off guard man… that was stuffed up… but well done in achieving the aspect of slaughter.

C3′s first episode goes totally against what the show’s about but it picks up from some of its mistakes in the second episode but if you’ve seen 4 episodes in you’ll be thinking “the camera angles and shots are so alike with Bakemonogatari” ;D Let’s leave it at that~

PERSONA 4!!! I ended up buying the game a while back and I'm loving it. I'm completely new to the Persona series. The game is still better but the anime is still enjoyable. I guess they wanted to rush things at first to give the main character his persona but the pacing from then on is quite nice ^^

As for “Crysis” I didn’t like it as much as Flags. Probably because during the time it was hailed as being an interactive 3D mark vantage rather than a game. Also being only able to experience it on medium might have hurted my enjoyment on the first game and Warhead. Other than that I think it’s a good game but that doesn’t mean I enjoyed it. I don’t know since I now have updated my graphics unit I think I should replay it.

I’m as hyped as you guys are for Fate/Zero and as for the Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, I’m reading the manga and omg.. it’s so hilarious! I totally recommend you either read the mange or watch the anime adaption! If anyone’s confused, the “half japanese/half british student with blonde hair” is NOT the girl with blonde hair in the moetron picture. Just to clarify for those who don’t know, it’s actually a guy but in other words it’s an anime about the dark hairded girl starting a club for all the people who don’t have friends to come together and ‘try’ to do what friends do for ‘fun’.

Of course I”m hyped about some other shows like Bakuman, SHANA!, Persona 4, Guilty Crown and some others but meh this is getting a bit long. I will be looking forward to the videos guys! Unless the problems Flags is facing would halt the process in publishing it on the site… hopefully not… you can do it Flags!

I feel the same as Xavier about Memochou at the moment. I didn’t really like episode 4 and I never liked Alice either, though Xcom is roping me back into watching it since he seemed to like episode 7. I guess I’ll give it another shot.

I’m with TSRL on Penguindrum. Favorite show of the season for me as well. The characters are genuinely interesting right off the bat, penguin antics, and fabulous transformation sequences. And like Baku said, the bizarreness of the plot (and presentation) is a big charm point for the show.

I definitely agree with you guys about Usagi Drop, they’re able to make the smallest stuff so great to watch and it truly touches you inside and it’s true, the emotional impact overwhelms Ano Hana somewhat (or whatever Xavier said XD) though surprisingly, I’ve only rarely teared up so far in Usagi Drop.

Sacred Seven- Not a bad series so far, it’s a bit slow and the fights are just meh right now. Only three episodes in and I do enjoy the art and character designs, course Geass characters lol

I might rethink about it after hearing such ‘positive’ feedbacks from you guys. It COULD be a tearjerker though I’ll come back to you on WHY I didn’t find this show that appealing. Maybe it just doesn’t suit my likings and I never thought of it as something the same as Maeda’s work…

Though I totally agree with you guys about Ano Hana, I am part of the group of people who did let out tears for the last episode and to me, it's a very enjoyable show but I can't see it retaining it's current place in my top 10 of 2011 as the year is only half way through. As for Denpa…

I will first of all say I did enjoy Denpa but not to the point of my expectations. It was my fault for expecting a different outcome. I don't dislike any of the characters but I do think some characters needed a bit more time and that the flow from one scene to another or one episode to another or a certain aspect changed to another wasn't top notch (which isn't that bad) but these are my own thoughts briefly summarized. I did write a review on it at Sekijitsu though and I do agree with TSRL about how bloggers are bias in one way or another XD Maybe I should also stop writing… hmm… any suggestions on improvements anyone?

I actually like Boyfriend, and I think it’s because they do remind me a lot of SHINee. They’re of course going to have a more cheesy, happy boy band concept for their video to gather and please their fangirls. I’m not too sure if they’d do a more sexier concept yet since they’re so damn young but we’ll just have to wait and see. Plus…THOSE TWINS HOT DAMN. I’m sold.

I…personally don’t like 2011 that much. I mean, it’s hard to beat SHINee’s and Super Junior’s comebacks last year, and the whole Kpop groups going to Japan makes me a bit irritated, especially since they mostly re-do their old songs, which tend to suck in Japanese (except for SHINee and the Mr. Taxi song).

Deadman- Great show love the story so far and crazy ass characters, agreed it’s so damn slow so far and to much censorship in some areas. Shiro feels so out of place in the prison thankfully they are explaining some of her background 5 was great.

Dog Days- Dropped after the first 15minutes…probably not going to even try again.

Denpa! Random and crazy, but have to agree Tofu they have dropped that whole scifi element after 3 and now its slice of life just like you said. Erio is fun to watch, agreed hope there is no romance between Erio and Makoto. Story agreed I have no idea where they are going so far, agreed Baku! Dem lips hahaha.

But yeah, interesting discussion on Madoka. Internet reactions aside, I agree one of it’s weakest points was its characters. You just kinda don’t give a shit about any of them in the first half. Sure, Mami’s death was cool and all, but I kinda just asked myself, “Not sure if care.” There were some other comments I had in my head while listening, but I don’t want to get a “gb2yourownblog” reaction.

But overall, I have to say I really liked the show despite the flaws you guys discussed. Great execution in terms of the presentation and story writing. And really, I have to applaud the show for sparking the anime community up a bit. It’s been a while since I’ve seen people get so passionate about discussions, whether in terms of analyzing Madoka’s plot, characters, nature, or just what this anime potentially means for the industry. I’ve seen so many threads on /a/ about whether or not the show is a “deconstruction” of the magical girl genre and it was amusing hearing Flag’s opinion on it.

Yeah I can understand what you’re saying Flags, it’s not as good to go about into the battle field just because of some chats amongst friends and gathering information that’s been pasted around which might not even be true.

As for your Madoka point, I absolutely do not see her “improve”. As we have explained there are numerous of scenes that cheapened and did not made that whole DEUS EX SCENE “impacting”. Madoka from that universe is probably by far one of the least developed, and least interesting to watch. Also as a protagonist, this is a shame.

As far as killing characters off yes it’s not the first one to do that, but something you don’t see often in that genre.

Great series for me anyway some fun characters to follow all but Madoka herself who just sits in the corner crying, until the end anyway she did improve.

I'm one of the 2000 anime watchers so I'm nto so fond of classic animes besides some well known ones like pokemon and digimon, some gundams and others I can't exactly recall. Card captor was actually great during my young childhood, I won't say I didn't enjoy it.

I really enjoy Nichijou but I don't think I'll be a hardcore fan of it just because it's from KyoAni. A lot of the shows I enjoy are from KyoAni so that does make me a slight KyoAni fan. ;D

I always associate myself with strong characters because I don’t understand weakness and how people just give up. It’s not my nature at all, I do something 150% or just don’t do it; it’s as simple as that. Except for the characters you mentioned, from the seasons gone by you can say I have some traits of Miho (Level E) and Kaoru (Amagami). And I can never be calm like Mikiya and always refreshing like Kazehaya.

Two great shows that caught my eye the second time around: Nichijou and Hanasaku Iroha. I did not notice that Hanasaku was produced by P.A Works “OTL The first episode was great, a serious slice-of-life which is quite new to me (considering I’ve watched shows like K-On and Lucky Star which were light and fluffy slice-of-life) But overall, great segment. Enjoyed listening to everyone’s opinions.

I like yuri. I read anything as long as the story is good. and there’s hot bishies/shoujos in it. except hentai. I don’t read yuri that often because most yuri manga I’ve come across don’t have appealing art.
I think Strawberry Panic is good start to watch yuri. I’ve read Girl Meets Girl, and it’s an all right manga. My favorite yuri right now is Kuttsukiboshi. Kuttsu has a poor animationa and some weird scenes that just makes me want to slap the director, but I find the the story to be ccccuuuuuttteee and dramatic. I need some drama in this life too.

Onto Macbooks! OSX Lion is going to be something and it’s not even released yet! As for my answer:
My ES21 process varies depending on the person and their response the first time I ask them. If they are open to the idea, I will take their word for it and only remind them from time to time (like you). If not, I will rickroll the crap out of them until they submit to my bidding (like Ruby). Some have been fairly easy (like Anaage, Overcooled) so it depends. And no black magic necessary but there are a lot of unfulfilled promises, bribery and lies used in between (my basement where we perform black magic is currently being fumigated. Deals with the devil non-permitting).

As for the Macbook issue…..since they recently changed to ATI, I doubt they will be going back to NVidia so soon unfortunately. Maybe during the next big redesign, which should be during Lion’s release or next year. I still have my 5 y/o MBP and its a beast in reliability so it doesnt matter to me. Then again, I only play Football Manager on my laptop so I’m not really that well versed in macbook grpahics. I think Shea will know more about that.

Ever since playing the bass guitar (left handed) start of 2010, I love it ever more! I’ve developed a certain listening skill where I can hear the bass even if it’s being drowned by other instruments. Any song with a good bass riff is a great song.

Baku, I’m really liking the background song, it’s very lively and fun which provides a nice atmosphere. It did sound like you said “vidjeo games” instead of “video games”. ^^ I do like the intro when you introduce yourself, and that’s something TSRL didn’t do, but it’s still fine. Breaking up the letters makes everything clearer, then again at the end it also sounded like you said ‘c’ ‘o’ ‘n’ instead of ‘m’. Well… that doesn’t matter because no ones dumb enough to type sekijitsu.con or is there? Overall, a splendid job done Baku ^^

Angel Beats is an alright name personally… Angel would stand for Tenshi (kanade) and everything related to her and the beats would resemble the beats of your heart, cause there was some romantic moments and also how Otanashi gave his heart to Kanade which gave her another life with a new ‘beating’ heart. But of course it can also mean beats as in music beats = girls dead monsters…self-explanatory.

The only problem with a visual novel episode is that I’m the only person that’s completed a number of them. I mean, if Baku hasn’t played the VN for Air, when he’s a Key fanboy, then that doesn’t say much for other VNs. Though he has played Clannad, Kanon, Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night.

waaait, so how was the ending of AIR in the visual novel? There’s no detail for that! :’( AIR was my first KEY anime too, so I really want to know which one is the best ending. SO far, I like the movie better than the anime. I watched it around 2 years ago (or so), but I wasn’t able to understand the anime properly. I did understand the movie; I think the movie storyline can be understood better than the anime… Plus, the romance between Yukihito and that girl is really shown in the move, and Yukihito didn’t change into a bird. Clannad might be a good anime to recommend but to me I've tried recommending Clannad to a friend of mine and she said that it was too confusing to follow so she dropped it after the second episode (or was it the first) A show I'd recommend for those who aren't interested would be the more mainstream since they are more familiar with them then if they get interested you can throw in some airing shows or something

I'd have to agree and maybe I could be elaborating from TSRL's point of view. Those who aren't interested in anime WILL base whatever they have seen from anime and relate it to every single other anime out there, just like how some people saw shit anime's and go "all anime is shit" like a friend of mine who said "nowadays the new anime's that come out are all shit now" because he saw a shit anime that came out during the time he said this. And there is those who just think of hentai when anime is mentioned…….ugh…….

Kickass, the most awkward title to ask a ticket for, is my number one movie of 2010, then its Inception, and then Scott Pilgrim. That little girl, Hit Girl, totally MADE that movie. It wouldn’t have been epic without her. I saw Inception twice, and I still was blown away, especially at that part in in the hotel’s hallway.

Podcast length is probably going to be an issue every time you guys talk about Type-Moon. There’s just so much lore involved that things can easily get out of hand (not that that’s a bad thing entirely…). By the way, any plans for a Fate/Stay Night podcast in the future?

I only just recently watched all the Kara no Kyoukai movies since someone recommended it to me, actually. Ohohoho, nice timing~ I really liked them too, and listening to this makes me want to rewatch it all. Especially since you guys pointed out a lot of little connections and things I didn't notice, like the bridge always being broken and Fujino appearing later. 5th movie was my favourite, but picking is so harddddd. Nice discussion, guys~

I am very disappointed, I had a lot of anticiapation for this episode.

And also, I feel the hatred people have for Shinji is blown incredibly out of proportion. People get obsessed over him whining and don’t understand that he’s the way he is because of his shitty support group. He doesn’t have a mother figure, his father’s an ass, and everyone just wants him to pilot a mecha which he never even dreamed of until he was forced into one. Everybody just wants results from him and thinks he can grow a spine overnight. Shinji’s not on my short list of favorites, but he’s a a character I’m happy to defend.

I’m using Jin as my main against anybody who got mad skills. Otherwise, I will change what characters I’m playing from time to time.
